Miller explains, “The pivot point during an MBA is not found only in a classroom.” The David Eccles School of Business provides the building blocks of success, but also offers multiple opportunities for students to gain leadership skills through involvement in school clubs, real-world experiences through case competitions, and networking opportunities outside the state through multiple study trips and conferences.
Thinking Bigger– Many of the first year students interviewed mentioned how the MBA program expanded their horizons. Tate Matta says when he started his MBA, he was thinking about returning to his previous company and working up the ladder. He says, “Now I really want to take stock of where I am after my internship with Ford and see how I can leverage that in opportunities in global HR. I definitely am thinking bigger.”
Real World Experience– Another first year MBA student, Marian Bonar, says she was able to attend the NSHMBA conference where she received help with her resume and was able to do mock interviews. Bonar is also involved with the Lassonde Center for New Venture Development and has been working with at team to develop the business plan and strategy for a videogame for kids with cancer. The Lassonde Center provides the students from across campus and across disciplines to work together with innovation and entrepreneurship.
Dual Degree Programs– To help students have a competitive edge, the David Eccles School of Business offers dual degree programs. You get the foundation of business while streamlining your education to include law, engineering, architecture, or healthcare. At the same time, you have all the advantages the college offers and an expanded network that can help you succeed.
Connections– One of the best offerings of the MBA program is the Business Career Management Center. Each advisor has 12 students or less allowing for in-depth knowledge of how to help you prepare for employment. You have opportunities to do interviews, be mentored by alumni through Connect U, meet with companies, and attend career fairs. In 2011, 100% of the students looking for an internship found one thanks to the staff’s involvement and connections within the business community.
