Program Characteristics

Q: How long will it take to complete the Professional MBA program?
A: The Professional MBA program takes 24 months to complete

Q: How many credit hours are required of Professional MBA students?
A: The program is 48 credit hours with 30 core business credit hours and 18 business elective credit hours.

Q: When and where are classes held?
A: Classes are held twice a week in the evening from 6-10 p.m. All classes are located on the University of Utah main campus.

Q: Do I get to choose what electives I take?
A: Yes. 40% of your curriculum is electives which allow you to personalize your education. You can select from courses in accounting, finance, information systems, management, marketing, and operations.

Q: Are career services offered to Professional MBA students?
A: Yes. Check out the Business Career Services website for details.

Q: Do you offer a joint degree program?
A: Yes. The Professional MBA offers a PMBA/MHA (Masters of Healthcare Administration) option. All other joint degree options are available through the Full-Time MBA program.

Q: When can I begin the Professional MBA program?
A: The Professional MBA program has two start dates. Students can begin the program in the fall, August start date, and in the spring, January start date.

Tuition and Fees

Q: What is the cost of the Professional MBA program?
A: Tuition for resident students who start in August 2011 and finish by July 2013 and maintain the prescribed number of credit hours will have a fixed per credit hour charge of $975. This cost includes:

  • Laptop Bag
  • Career Services
  • Networking Events
  • University Fees
  • Printing
  • Use of Computing Facilities and Library Databases


The fixed tuition rate applies to students who complete the program within 24 months and maintain the prescribed number of credit hours per semester set by the Professions MBA program office. Tuition may vary for those who take less than the prescribed number of credit hours. All tuition is not due upfront. Tuition is paid for on a semester-by-semester basis, based upon the number of credit hours taken.

All incoming students are required to purchase a laptop that meets the program's laptop specification requirements.

Q: What is the admission deposit and when is it due?
A: Upon notification of acceptance to the Professional MBA program, a non-refundable deposit of $685 is required to indicate intent to register. This $685 will reserve the student's seat in the entering class and $500 of the deposit will be applied toward fall semester tuition and fees.  Information about the deposit and payment due date will be included with the acceptance letter. The deposit is typically due within two weeks of receiving the admission offer.

Q: Are there scholarships offered for the Professional MBA program?
A: No. Scholarships are not available for the Professional MBA program. Students interested in financial aid and outside scholarships should visit the financial aid section of our website.

Q: Is financial aid available to Professional MBA students?

A: Yes. There are sources of financial aid available to meet the needs of Professional MBA students, including Stafford Federal loans and private loans through the University of Utah. For more information please visit the University of Utah Financial Aid website or FAFSA website.

Q: How do I apply for the Professional MBA program?
A: In order to make applying to the Professional MBA program easier our application process has been streamlined. If you have any questions about the application process please contact our office at (801)581-6836. The application is available online, and you can apply by filling out our online application.

Q: When are your application deadlines?
A: The Professional MBA program uses a rolling admissions process. We will evaluate completed applications as they are received. Therefore, there is an added benefit to those applicants who apply early. The application process will remain open until all the seats are full. Q: What are the requirements to apply to the Professional MBA program?
A: Your applications will be complete once the following items are submitted:

  1. Professional MBA Admissions Application
    • Intended Major: Business Administration PR MBA
    • Application Fee
    • Official Transcripts
    • Letter of Recommendation (2)
    • Applicable Essay Questions
    • Current Resume
  2. Official GMAT Score
    • The GRE will only be accepted in lieu of the GMAT if previously taken for another graduate program
  3. Interview with Professional MBA Administrator


Q: How much weight is placed on the various elements of the application?
A: The admissions committee takes a look at the full application package. All components of the application GMAT, previous academic coursework, work experience, essays, letters of recommendation, and interview are important.

Q: Do you have a required minimum GMAT, GPA, or work experience?
A: While there are no minimum requirements for these elements, our applicant pool is highly competitive. The class admitted fall 2011 had an average of 570 on the GMAT, 3.4 GPA, and 5.3 years work experience. Remember, the admissions committee looks at all application materials before making a decision.

Q: What are the topics of the essay questions and how long should the essays be?

A: Please write a one page essay responding to the following topics.

  • Explain your decision and motivation for applying to the MBA program
  • Why you feel you are a strong candidate for the MBA program
  • How will getting an MBA influence your career intentions


The essay is to be single-spaced, typed, and may not exceed one page.

OPTIONAL ESSAY: What other information about you is important in considering your application? (If a GPA is below a 3.0, the David Eccles School of Business must appeal to the University of Utah on behalf of the applicant. These applicants are strongly encouraged to address their GPAs in this essay)

Q: Does my undergraduate degree need to be in business?
A: No. In fact 60% of the students admitted in fall 2011 did not have an undergraduate business degree.

Q: Is an interview required for admission?
A: Yes. Once your completed application is received, you will be contacted for an interview. The interview helps assess your skills and motivation and allows for additional character insight as part of the admission process.

Q: How many students are accepted into the program?

A: We estimate 100-120 students for the fall start and 50-70 students for the spring start.

Q: Do you accept transfer credit hours?
A: No, the Professional MBA program does not accept graduate transfer credits from other programs or institutions.
