The American Accounting Association (AAA) recently announced that our very own Dr. Martha Eining was one of two recipients of the 2014 AAA Outstanding Service Award along with Gail Hoover King. This AAA award, which may be awarded at any time by the Board of Directors, was presented in the form of unique glass art pieces to the pair on Tuesday, August 5th at the 2014 AAA Annual Meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Martha M. Eining, David Eccles Professor, is the Director of Accounting Programs at The University of Utah. She received her Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University and her undergraduate and MBA from Fort Hays State University.

One of the primary contributions which lead to the award is highlighted in this statement from the Board of Directors:

“In recognition of your willingness to extend involvement and understanding of scholarly publishing beyond that of a passionate research and lead the Intellectual Property Task Force By effectively evaluating publications business models, your task force improved our understanding that managing world-class partners is a key competency for the Association. Your work is the foundation of the Association’s focus on building a network to enhance visibility and impact of its scholarship, while providing a solid financial structure for the future.”

Dr. Eining has published in various journals, including Contemporary Accounting Research, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, and Journal of Information Systems. Her research interests include professional skepticism, management fraud, and non-profit governance. She was named Accounting Educator of the Year by the Women’s Society of CPAs in 2012 and Utah Accounting Educator of the Year in 2009. She has also received research, teaching and /or service awards from the University of Utah and the AAA.

Dr. Eining served as Grant Thornton’s first National Professor in Residence. She has also served as a consultant to the KPMG Audit Research Group. She was a board member and chair of the audit committee for First Electronic Bank and has been active in the AAA and in community service.

The Outstanding Service Award recognizes outstanding services to the Association other than educational and research contributions. The prestigious award is intended only for rare events or milestones achieved. More information about this award is available here.
