A group of 55 Business Scholars headed to sunny Scottsdale to take in a Colorado Rockies Spring Training game and meet with Rockies’ owner and David Eccles School of Business alumnus, Charlie Monfort.

During the weeks leading up to their visit, the students worked with Mike Lewis, a Professor of Accounting, on a case study of sports management, including reading Money Ball. After a tour of Salt River Fields including the Rockies’ practice fields, weight rooms, and locker rooms, the students were able to meet with Monfort and ask him questions about the business of baseball.

Monfort, along with his brother, invested in bringing the Rockies’ to Colorado. He said he runs his organization like a family, treating all with respect. Monfort also advised the students to consider international opportunities, like study abroad, and to keep their eyes open for opportunities in the global market.

In addition to the honors students, a group of alumni joined us for the game. Graduate Jack Antonelli was thrilled to be invited. In 1970, Antonelli received his MBA from the U while in Germany, and went on to a successful career with Melville Corp and ADP. Having received his education through the military program, he has never been to campus. Therefore, he was happy to meet some fellow Utes in Arizona. Alumni from across the state attended, catching a great game and meeting our fantastic students.

A great event, we even came away with a win. Rockies 5, Brewers 2!
