Department of Finance

Finance Statement

The Department of Finance is a leader in experiential education.  We provide students with many alternative learning opportunities including the Week on Wall Street, Top Jobs, the Student Investment Fund, and the University Venture Fund.  Top Jobs has helped place students at prestigious companies such as Goldman Sachs and Ford Motor Company.  The distinguished Utah Winter Finance Conference, established by members of our faculty, along with the Seminar Speaker series, allows for dialogue and networking beyond the classroom.  Within the classroom we offer a wide range of classes in areas such as investing, stocks and bonds, banking, international and corporate finance, real estate, and CFA prep courses.  Our top undergraduate students can take advantage of an Honors in Finance Degree, the first established honors degree option in the David Eccles School of Business.  Combined with strong Masters in Finance and PhD programs, our department provides finance students with the choices and resources they need to succeed.  And, with a current ranking of nineteenth in the world for research, our international reputation further reflects the caliber of our program.

Members of the Department of Finance faculty merge their professional experience with outstanding research and commitment to their students.  Faculty members have been invited to participate on federal investigative panels or as expert witnesses in large financial scandals.  Many routinely disseminate their research through national publication such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, and Forbes.  They are internationally known for research in the areas of theoretical and empirical market design and trading costs, organizational form, international finance and emerging markets, leasing, information economics, ethics in finance, agency theory, optimal contracting, bankruptcy, dividend policy, managerial incentives, and energy markets. In addition, eight of our faculty members have won teaching awards.
