Spencer F. Eccles Convocation

Robert A. McDonald MBA '78| CEO, Procter & Gamble | January 25, 2012

Bob McDonaldBob McDonaldThe annual Spencer Fox Eccles Convocation honors Spencer Fox Eccles for the significant role he played in securing the $15 million endowment given to the School in 1991 by his aunt, Emma Eccles Jones. The school is named after Spencer Fox Eccles’ grandfather, David Eccles, honoring his achievement as a pioneer industrialist and entrepreneur in the Intermountain Region at the turn of the century. Emma Eccles Jones was the last surviving child of David Eccles. She passed away six months after she made the gift to the school.

An alumnus of the David Eccles School of Business, Spencer Fox Eccles, is the Chairman Emeritus of Wells Fargo Intermountain Banking Region. He is an ardent supporter and a great friend of the University of Utah. He serves on the National Advisory Board of the David Eccles School of Business and is the honorary chair for the school’s current capital campaign.

For the past 20 years, funds from the Emma Eccles Jones endowment have allowed the David Eccles School of Business to fund scholarships, professorships, faculty awards and several key programs. This year the endowment funded 18 scholarships and 28 faculty scholars.

Convocation speakers are business leaders who exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit of David Eccles. They are asked to speak on lessons they have learned in business.

The 2012 Convocation speaker was Robert A. "Bob" McDonald, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Proctor & Gamble, who earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Utah in 1978.

Business and Anthropology Roundtable

Dr. Karen Stephenson | April 5, 2011

Dr. Stephenson delivered a lecture called "Cultural Shift or Drift? How Leaders Can Leverage Networks for Business Impact," as part of efforts to showcase the crucial connections between business and the humanities.

Mostefforts to guide employees toward organizational change are met with chronic resistance and modest success. In the long term, the "change" drifts back to where the organization began in the first place. Culture is very difficult to shift if leaders don't know who the "cultural connectors" are. Decoding culture to identify the critical connectors can provide insight into cultural change and the reasons for resistance to change—something that every leader needs to know.
