The purpose of the MHA degree is to provide advanced and specialized professional preparation for students wishing to enter positions in healthcare administration. The degree prepares students for administrative, policy, and planning positions in both the public and private sectors.
Each of the joint MHA programs gives priority to applicants who have experience working with healthcare organizations either in administrative or clinical positions. Although there is not a minimum requirement for work experience, applicants should have two years of post-baccalaureate work experience for admission to the MBA, four years for the MPA, and two years for the MPH.
The MBA/MHA prepares students for administrative positions in hospitals, large clinics, extended care facilities, clinical and reference laboratories, as well as for positions in healthcare consulting and with vendors such as those providing information technology to healthcare organizations.
The MPA/MHA prepares students for positions in health policy and health advocacy organizations such as the Utah Health Policy Project, the Governor’s Office of Health Data, and HealthInsights, the state’s healthcare quality improvement organization.
The MPH/MHA prepares students for positions in state and local health departments and other public health groups. Regardless of career destination, the MHA prepares students to deal with the complex and rapidly changing world of healthcare delivery in which access, quality, and efficiency must be balanced.
