Opportunity Scholars Program

>> Back

The Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) at the David Eccles School enhances the diverse community of University of Utah classrooms. The program has grown behind the support of generous donors who recognize the importance of providing educational support for students who are considered need based. The students in the program are typically the first in there family to attend college and also represent cultures that are under-represented in higher education.

The Opportunity Scholar Program:

  • influences diversity in the classroom, the program contributes to the educational experience of all students at the David Eccles School by introducing students with diverse experiences into the collaborative environment.
  • supports education through scholarships, tutoring and academic advising. The program goes beyond financial assistance, to provide students with mentors, internships, service learning projects and networking opportunities.
  • prepares students to be business leaders by providing a superior education and innovative experience.

Contributing to the Program

The Opportunity Scholars Program is funded entirely by donations from University of Utah alumni, businesses and foundations.  In a short time the program has had a significant impact in assisting its target student population to gain a college education.  The program looks to expand its capabilities in the future and overcome retention and recruiting challenges.Op Scholar2

Students in the Opportunity Scholars Program receive:

  • Tuition based scholarships.
  • Tutoring, mentoring, and academic advisement.
  • Preparation for interviews, internships, service learning, and networking opportunities.

Currently, 49 students are involved in the Opportunity Scholars Program.  The dynamic demographics of the program include students from the following backgrounds: Anglo, Middle Eastern, African-American, Native-American, Asian Pacific Islander, Eastern European, South Africa and Hispanic/Latino

The Program is faced with a delicate balancing act of supporting students currently in the program and recruiting new students for the program without knowing whether future funding will be available.  Our goal is to pre-fund current students through graduation and secure additional funding to boost recruiting efforts.
