The David Eccles School of Business has received national acclaim for its educational programs that foster the development of industry expertise. Our curriculum is complemented by experience-enriched learning; we provide our students the opportunity to make an impact in industry, while gaining an education.
American Marketing Association
Students gain valuable professional exposure through association's with marketing professionals. Members interface with peers and volunteers to discuss career options, education and marketing trends.
Beta Alpha Psi
Beta Alpha Psi is a national accounting honor society and a professional accounting fraternity. Its purpose is to recognize academic achievements in the field of accounting, to promote the study and practice of accounting, and to provide opportunities for self-development and association among members and practicing accountants. Professor Lavar Harline is the faculty advisor for the David Eccles School chapter.
Board Fellows
Board Fellows is a service learning program offered by Net Impact. The program enables MBA and MPA students to serve as ex-officio members on a local nonprofit board of directors. Student-fellows learn first hand the rewards and challenges of board service, gain an understanding of management in the nonprofit sector, and develop relationships with member of successful boards.
Case Competition Teams
Organized to enhance analytical, logic, business and presentation skills and to provide students with opportunities to solve "real-life, real-time" business cases in a competitive setting. Business professionals are actively engaged in judging the case competitions and providing feedback. Students also have the opportunity to be selected to serve on teams and represent the program at national competitions.
Delta Epsilon Chi (DEX) International Business/Marketing Organization
DEX is an international professional organization for students of marketing, management and entrepreneurship. The organization focuses on leadership development, competition and community involvement.
Entrepreneur Challenge
The Entrepreneurs' Club was organized to provide students with real-world exposure to the realm of the entrepreneur. The club hosts seminars given by local entrepreneurs and others involved with start-ups and small business. These experienced mentors share their experiences and critical insights into business success and profitability. In the past, seminars have included topics such as evaluation of business ideas, building business plans and finding venture capital. Students are often asked to share their own experiences running a business. All interested students are welcome.
Financial Management Association (FMA)
Established in 1970, the FMA is a global leader in developing and disseminating knowledge about financial decision making. The mission of the FMA is to broaden the common interests and opportunities for academicians, practitioners and students.
Future Healthcare Leaders of America - FHLA
Provides preparation for a career in the healthcare industry. Healthcare executives work with students to discuss different areas of the industry, including career options. Members attend guest lectures, seminars, and the ACHE Congress in Chicago.
Graduate Business Student Association
Every business master student is automatically a member of GBSA. The GBSA Council is elected each year by the student body to organize and coordinate subcommittees that plan social, academic and service opportunities. The Council appoints representatives to other college and administrative committees. GBSA is involved in all activities of the masters programs and the David Eccles School of Business, including placement, policy, and promotion and tenure of faculty. Hispanic Business Student Association
The Hispanic Business Student Association strives for the development of Hispanic business students by networking and creating leadership opportunities within the business community.
International Business Student Association
This is an organization that promotes international awareness and interaction among students interested in international business. The organization provides information about international and cultural activities and informs students about international opportunities such as field studies, international exchanges and internships.
The Ivory-Boyer Utah Real Estate Center
The center exposes students to all aspects of the industry including investment, development and asset management. The center hosts an annual contest on real estate development; that involves a large number of industry professionals who mentor student groups.
Lassonde Center
With campus scientists, engineers and inventors to determine the commercial viability of new technologies. Undergraduate and graduate students from many disciplines, including science and business, take part in Lassonde Center projects. They review new technologies that have been registered with the University Technology Transfer Office to determine economic viability. A business plan is developed by students working to take the technology to market.
Low Income Taxpayers Clinic (LITC)
The University of Utah Low Income Taxpayer Clinic provides the opportunity for David Eccles School of Business accounting students to provide free assistance to low-income taxpayers in resolving federal income tax issues and to represent those taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service in audit, appeals, and collection issues, and federal tax litigation. The clinic also provides students the opportunity to teach tax-related information to taxpayers who speak English as a second language. The program is housed in the School of Accounting in the David Eccles School of Business School under the direction of Professor David Plumlee. Accounting students work under the supervision of Michael Blackburn, JD and adjunct faculty, to provide these community services. Funding for the clinic is provided through a competitive matching grant process with the Internal Revenue Service. In addition to providing a valuable service to the community at-large, the clinic enhances our students¹ experiences by providing them with a value-added service-learning opportunity.

Master's Entrepreneur Club
The Master's Entrepreneur Club is a student driven organization that promotes the development of business ideas from University of Utah students across the campus. The aim is to bring together entrepreneurs with varying skill sets and match student interests such that business ideas gain a foothold become a reality. Regular meetings are held to enhance student understanding of business plans and ownership in preparation for various local, state, and nationwide competitions.
Net Impact
National organization of MBA students that use business to build a better world. The organizational goal is to increase awareness of social responsibility in business planning and decision-making. Net Impact sponsors the Board Fellows Program which oversees student placement on community non-profit boards of directors.
The National Association of Women in Business
This association addresses the professional and personal concerns of women in business programs while promoting fellowship among its members. The group's goal is to establish the organization as a vital participant in shaping the effectiveness of the business programs, helping members succeed in school, and preparing them for transition to a professional career.
Opportunity Quest
This is a campus-wide business innovation competition exclusively for University of Utah students. The program is designed to encourage students to develop business concepts in a competition setting. Opportunity Quest also provides students wishing to enter a business plan in the Entrepreneur Challenge the opportunity to have their concept critiqued and evaluated before entering it in the Challenge.
SMART Start
SMART Start matches students with volunteer business executives working in industries and professions where students hope to build their careers. Through a year-long process, participants work closely with mentors to understand industry demands. Mentors host students at their companies, review resumes and conduct mock interviews.
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
SHRM represents a great opportunity for students interested in working in the field of human resource (HR) management. Quoting from the national organization's web site, "... the Society's mission is to serve the needs of HR professionals by providing the most essential and comprehensive resources available. As an influential voice, the Society's mission is also to advance the human resource profession to ensure that HR is recognized as an essential partner in developing and executing organizational strategy." One of the most important benefits of the student chapter of SHRM is the opportunity to network with HR professionals through the Salt Lake Chapter.
Sorenson Discovery & Innovation Center
The Center provides a collaborative learning and teaching environment for faculty and students and establishes the foundation to transform discovery and innovation studies, while changing the way students and scholars view the world of business and industry.
Sorenson Inventor Showcase
Utah’s premier networking event for inventors, entrepreneurs and the business community. The annual conference highlights technologies from Utah universities – from concept, to prototype, to well-established companies – and provides a venue for local industry leaders to connect with researchers and scientists, encouraging collaborative commercialization efforts.
Speaker Series
The Speaker Series brings prominent entrepreneurs and business leaders into a forum environment where they can share their personal road to success. The series has a regular attendance of over 250 students and local professionals and has become recognized as the premier speaker series at the University of Utah.
Tech Titans
Tech Titans is a state-wide idea competition administered by students at The University of Utah.
The University Venture Fund
Started in 2001 at University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business, University Venture Fund (UVF) is an independent venture capital firm committed to improving the quality of entrepreneurial education for a diverse group of students at its participating universities. The fund is a collaborative effort between students, universities and the professional investment community in which students raise capital, perform due diligence on venture capital opportunities and make investments. In addition to being the largest fund of its kind, UVF is the first fund for which students raise all the capital and the first student-run fund that has a traditional limited-partner relationship with its investors. WorkNet Partnering with MBA Career Management
WorkNet arranges 5-6 visits per semester to local companies. Students have the opportunity to hear from upper management, learn about the industry, how the company fits into the industry and career opportunities within various function areas. WorkNet also sponsors annual treks to out-of-state locations for student company visits.
