Salt Lake City is an energetic metropolis nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Oquirrhs Mountains to the west. A close community, Salt Lake City is a friendly western city surrounded by natural majestic beauty. Salt Lake City offers many outdoor activities including hiking, camping and biking along its shoreline trails and canyons. And don't forget Salt Lake City was the host of the 2002 Winter Olympics. The city offers 10 world-class ski resorts, many within 20 minutes of the University of Utah, nestled in the benches five miles from downtown.

Climate: Salt Lake City is a semi-arid continental climate with four distinct seasons. July is the warmest month, usually with temperatures around 90 degrees. January is the coldest month, temperatures are usually around 20 degrees. The low humidity and year-round sunshine provides a very suitable climate whatever the season.

Salt Lake City has an average elevation of 4,327 feet. The highest point within city limits is Grandview Peak, which is 9,410 feet above sea level.
Great Salt Lake:
With Salt Lake City named after the famous salt-water lake, Great Salt Lake is distinctly different than any other body of water you may know. Salt Lake City sits on an area once covered by a prehistoric lake, Lake Bonneville. The body of water stretched an incredible distance, covering parts of Utah, Idaho and Nevada. When Lake Bonneville diminished, it left what is now the Great Salt Lake. The second-largest salt-water lake in the world, Great Salt Lake is eight times saltier than the ocean, making it difficult for any organism other than brine shrimp to survive in its harsh waters.
