The Program:

The Master of Science in Finance (MS Finance) degree offers a general background in finance with an emphasis on corporate finance and investments. In addition, elective classes (5000-level) are offered in banking, insurance, and real estate.

Length of Program - The time required to complete the MS Finance degree depends upon the student's background. With an undergraduate degree from a business school nationally accredited by the AACSB, students can complete the program in one year with a minimum of 31.5 semester credit hours. Students without the business course background will require more time. Required course work must be completed within four consecutive calendar years.

Program Comprehensive Exam - Every MS Finance student must complete a final comprehensive exam that covers the breadth of material and its integration in the field. Students take the exam in their last semester of the program.

Prospective Students:

Students who wish to enter the MS Finance program must hold a Bachelors Degree from colleges or universities nationally accredited. Accelerated programs are available to students with an undergraduate degree in Finance. We strongly encourage prospective students to request a Prerequisite Review to determine which prerequisite courses or their equivalents have been completed and which prerequisites remain. Please complete the MSF Worksheet and fax it to (801) 581-3666 to begin the Prerequisite Review. Upon completion, the hardcopy worksheet is returned with signatures to identify those courses which have been identified as equivalents. If you have questions regarding the Prerequisite Review, please call (801) 581-7785.

Highlights:

David Eccles School's MS Finance degree strives to prepare students to achieve the rigorous Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) certification.  Students receive the certification after passing three levels of testing administered by the CFA Institute. We offer two finance core courses that incorporate the content covered in the Level I and Level II CFA® exams. A well-prepared student could take the AIMR-administered Level I exam in December and the Level II exam in June (the Level III exam could be taken one year later). Level I exams are offered in December and June, while Level II and III exams are offered in June only. Major corporations, banks, and investment managers recognize the CFA® as a distinction of superior knowledge and achievement.

PhD Students: Finance Doctoral students may complete the MS Finance degree with at least 28 hours of Ph.D. course work and a master thesis or case project.
