William H. Whyte, Jr.
William H. Whyte, Jr. was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania and graduated from Princeton in 1939. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Guadalcanal. In addition, Whyte was the assistant managing editor of Fortune. He also contributed to Harper's, Encounter, and The Saturday Review. In 1952, he published Is Anybody Listening?, a collection of articles on communication which originally appeared in Fortune. In 1953, he won the Benjimin Franklin Award for the best magazine article on U.S. life. Whyte then published The Organization Man in 1956. After the publication of Is Anybody Listening?, Whyte was recognized as one of the leading figures in the analysis of American culture.
