MBA & MS Engineering
The PayoffThe MS/MBA combines students’ applied interests and training in Engineering with the comprehensive business sense developed in a full-time MBA program. The result is a professional comfortable moving between the technical and the commercial. So why is this valuable? In simple terms, engineers create and or improve products, processes and systems. However, the ultimate relevance/usefulness of such new knowledge is determined not just by the laws of physics or chemistry, but also by the business environment and the judgment of the market. Conceiving or understanding a technical innovation requires technical depth. Similarly, anticipating or even influencing the market’s reaction requires an integrated understanding of business in addition to the value creation approach fundamental to the business mindset. Professionals trained to exploit both perspectives are valuable assets to companies who rely on technology innovation to stay competitive. MBA/MS graduates will be, with appropriate experience, qualified to direct or manage the transition of new products, processes and systems from the laboratory to the board room. MBA/MS students develop this ability through access to recognized academic programs/faculty, leading edge research centers and substantive participation in commercialization processes available only at the University of Utah. It is the application of coursework in the actual research/development/commercialization process that develops professionals skilled at effectively (1) envisioning technology driven solutions, (2) evaluating those solutions as potential new products or processes, (3) facilitating their rapid instantiation, commercialization and use of in the most appropriate manner, and (4) directing new knowledge development. The Degrees
Master of Science (MS) Chemical Engineering & MBA The Program2 + 1 = 2 OR > 3Because there is intellectual benefit from studying engineering and business administration in a coordinated program, a student enrolled in the joint degree program earns both degrees in 21-24 months of full-time study. In general, students take 21 credit hours in the College of Engineering, 47 hours in the College of Business and a 6 hour capstone project course taught across the Colleges. Up to 9 credit hours appear on the program of study for both degrees eliminating up to 18 credit hours that would be required to complete the two programs separately. The net is a two year MBA and a one year MS in two years – a considerable time and cost advantage. More importantly, participating in the academic and research lives of two outstanding colleges throughout their program, gives MS/MBA student a significant leg up when it comes to contributing in the research/development/commercialization process at any stage while at the university and beyond.
Degree RequirementsThe MBA/MS programs are based on the assumption that because there is intellectual benefit from studying engineering and business administration in a coordinated program, a student enrolled in the joint degree program would be able to earn both degrees in less time and with a lower overall credit requirement than were that student enrolled in each program separately. In general, students will take 21 credit hours in the College of Engineering, 47 hours in the College of Business and a 6 hour capstone project course taught across the Colleges. Up to 9 credit hours of courses would appear on the program of study for both degrees and listed as “courses common to the dual degree programs”. This option eliminates up to 18 credit hours that would be required for completing the two programs separately. Program students must meet with their advisors in both colleges regularly to verify their program of study. Application ProcessOne program, three applications, five possible outcomes
1. University of Utah Graduate School Admission Requirements
Four year Technical Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution Applicants apply to and are evaluated by their engineering department and the full-time MBA admission committees separately, and then jointly. As a result, a successful applicant may be accepted to one but not the other program, accepted by both programs giving them the option to do either program as a stand alone or both in the dual program, In very limited cases a student may also be admitted to only the dual degree program. Applicants with work experience (including internships) will be given admission preference in admission in the MBA and dual degree programs. Applicants should refer to departmental websites and www.business.utah.edu for application requirements and deadlines. FAQCan the program be done part-time? The present intent to have students completely immersed for up to two years in the interplay of engineering and business so admission is initially limited to students who can devote themselves full-time to the program. As the program matures there may be accommodations made for working professionals. Certificate programs are being considered as an alternative to formal degree programs. How long does it take? The program can be completed in 21-24 months of full-time study. Students will be expected to take coursework during the summer. Actual time to complete will depend on the course/workload and availability of classes. How does admission to the program work? Applicants must apply to and be accepted by their home engineering department and the full-time MBA program separately. During the start-up phase of the program students will be allowed to apply their GRE scores to the MBA’s GMAT requirement, although students are encourage to take both. Application deadlines will also be extended in this first year. Applicants with work experience (including internships) will be given preference in admission to the dual degree programs. I already have a graduate business or engineering degree. Can I just take the business or engineering hours to get the other degree? No. The program was conceived and approved as an integrated educational experience. Are assistantships/scholarships available? Yes. A limited number of partial assistantships are available to qualified applicants. In their all second year students will be encouraged to work with entities on campus in approved “internship” programs to gain additional experience and to provide their tuition support. During the program can I decide to just get one of the degrees? Yes, but one must satisfy all requirements of the chosen degree program as if it were taken as a stand alone. That is, not all credits taken may apply to the stand alone degree program. Students completing the dual degree program must satisfy all business and engineering program requirements before either degree will be awarded.
